CHAPTER 20

AVALON SIGHED, GLANCING at her reflection in the mirror.

She really should have been grateful. Kay had told her how hard it was to find a dress on such short notice. Still, her opinion of him plummeted as she eyeballed the outfit she wore. Whoever had created this dress must have thought she was going to a medieval-themed prom from the 1980s on Earth. The satin dress had obnoxious puffed sleeves that threatened to brush her ears if she tilted her head even slightly to the side. Layers of bunched fabric oozed down to her ankles as if she had a fancy lampshade wrapped around her waist. When she bent her hips, the entire thing turned.

Her favorite childhood doll owned clothes less gawdy.

A knock reverberated through her room. “You ready, Miss Benton?” Vernal’s faint voice broke through.

Fashionable or not, Avalon would not skip the Gathering Ball. She was done lounging about feeling sorry for herself. Her excursion with Isolde had cured her of that. More importantly, the ball might give her more insight into this crazy world she found herself in.

And, of course, she might talk to Kay for the first time in days.

Vernal met her on the landing outside her room. He appeared handsome in a freshly pressed guard uniform with a few bits of extra medal flare, his Covert K training belt adding a splash of color. He did a double take at her outfit.

“That’s… unique.”

Isolde stood to Vernal’s side, almost unrecognizable without her pigtails, hair flowing to her shoulders in waves. Avalon envied the elf’s simple black, Audrey Hepburn style dress.

“Wow!” She scrutinized Avalon from head to foot. “I have never seen anything like it!”

“With any luck, you never will again,” Avalon muttered. “Where did you get that dress?”

“I packed it. It’s a bit plain, but it travels well. You never know when you’ll need formalwear.”

“Good tip for next time.” Avalon gestured toward the staircase.

Vernal led them down the Wind Tower and through the winding hallways of the castle below toward the public section of the Earth Tower. Instead of continuing down the extensive corridor to the room where the Guardians and Titans had gathered, another large set of doors stood open to the side. A crowd had gathered—fairies with their wings bejeweled to match their sparkling made-up faces, dwarves wearing rope-like braids with ribbons intertwined in their beards and intricately embroidered dress shirts, and elves with more foliage than clothes on. Other Aossi and human mixed among them, their styles as varied as their personalities.

No one, Avalon noted with disdain, had any type of dress resembling her nostalgic nightmare.

They advanced toward the front of the line, moving as slowly as any major attraction at Fantasma. Isolde could not contain her excitement, pointing out the historical significance of the crown moldings near the ceilings and identifying the era of the armor lining the hallway. Up ahead, knights ushered posh guests in clusters of two and three into a room before shutting the wide double doors behind them. As they waited, the line doubled behind them and spilled out into the courtyard.
